Because the Galactica was losing so many Vipers, Galen Tryriol decided to build his own. The Blackbird was made with whatever he could find, but it was highly maneuverable, had stealth capabilities, and was capable of FTL travel. It didn’t have guns but the crew fitted it with a missile, which was used in the episode 'Resurrection Ship.'
